Securing Critical Infrastruktur

Critical infrastructures, which include communication networks, are of great importance for the state community. In the event of their failure, there would be significant disruptions to public safety or other dramatic consequences.

According to the EU- Directive 2022/2557on the resilience of critical entities, operators must implement an attack detection system that informs them automatically and in real time about security failures.

The 5G SENS ALERT is a simple retrofit solution for cable ducts to detect and document manhole openings in real time. Detection of service employees on site by means of Bluetooth key fobs makes it possible to distinguish between a planned opening in a service case and an attack.

The hardware

The easy-to-install retrofit solution consists of a communication module and up to 3 robust limit switches (best known from automation technology). These limit switches are used to detect the opening of the manhole cover. The communication module then sends an alert to the cloud backend

Dashboards

The solution also offers a cloud dashboard for monitoring the various cable ducts. In the event of a detected opening, the history is updated in the dashboard.

Documentation

All openings of the cable ducts are fully documented with this system. In addition, it is possible to detect openings by service staff. For this purpose, the service employees receives a Bluetooth key fob. When opened, the communication module scans for nearby Bluetooth ID tags and transmits the found data to the cloud. There, the opening is documented by the corresponding service employee.

Reference

Cito Networks GmbH operates a fiber-optic ring in Berlin. The route of this network-ring runs right through Berlin’s city center. With the high-performance and secure fibre optic lines are supplied to important major customers, such as mobile network operators and several medium-sized companies. The ring features:

  • 82.5 km of route
  • 650 bays
  • 20 bridge crossings
  • 2 Cross-links
  • 170 km² catchment area

The monitoring solution was developed by Exelonix together with the experts from Cito Networks and is currently being retrofitted in all cable ducts in the network-ring.

Exelonix will present the solution at the 7th Broadband Forum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on 02.11.2023 in Rostock-Warnemünde, at the exhibition booth of the Langmatz manufacturer of polycarbonate manholes.
